IPL Auction & The Surprises It Brought

So what’s the biggest surprise of this year’s IPL auction ?

Pat Cummins getting 15.5 Crores

17 year old Yashasvi Jaiswal getting 2.4 Crores Or

Players like Neesham and Jason Roy getting sold for a low price.

It’s quite a reputation of IPL auction to surprise everyone always and so has been done this year also. Pat Cummins was in the list of everyone but nobody had thought he would fetch such a big bid.

Talking about Teams perspective going into the auction, let’s begin with the biggest team of this tournament.

Chennai Super Kings

The CSK guys have always been polite bidders and so were they in this auction. They hardly bid for 5-6 players. Had their specific plans and they executed them.

Foreign fast bowlers have always been an issue for CSK. So this time they have got Sam Curran who gives them an option to bat a bit in death overs. Josh Hazelwood is also a good buy who can provide them early break throughs.

However, getting Piyush Chawla for 6.25 crores comes as a big surprise as they already have 6 quality spinners in their side.

Kolkata Knight Riders

So they are the biggest newsmakers of this auction. Pat Cummins and Eoin Morgan are some real good buys keeping the Eden Gardens track in mind.

They really need to prove their decision right by getting the output from Cummins. Tom Banton and Rahul Tripathi are also good picks.

Delhi Capitals

This team is in right direction since last year and looks like they have done well in this auction too. They already have traded Ashwin which will impact their performance for sure.

They have got Jason Roy and Chris Woakes for a mere 1.5 Crores. However getting Hetmyer for 7.75 Crores is a bit risky considering his last season performance.

Kings 11 Punjab

The worst bidders of this auction??

Well it looks like. They have invested huge in Maxwell and Cottrell. We need to keep in mind that Maxwell hasn’t performed well at all for the last 4 seasons.

It needs to be mentioned that the best bid of this auction was made by them getting Neesham for only 50 lakhs.

Rajasthan Royals

One more season for Unadkat with the Royals. However this time at a much lower price.

Getting Robin Uthapa, Miller, Tye and Jaiswal all at small prices, they must be really happy with this auction.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

So once again Bangalore have gone for the big foreign names rather than actually building a side.

An off form Morris for 10 crores will raise a lot of question marks.

Mumbai Indians

Chris Lynn at a very small bid, Coulter Nile at a very high bid. This sums up the auction for Mumbai Indians.

An already power packed team with the inclusion of Boult through the trade window didn’t left any loophole in their team.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Same as Mumbai Indians they didn’t have much places to fill. They have got young faces in Priyam Garg and Virat Singh and Mitch Marsh , all of them at a relatively low price.

So, every year auction gives us an insight of how teams are going to approach in the tournament. Also this year’s auction was more about the big names which may or may not perform.

Their are players like Yusuf pathan who were the rock stars right from season 1 being left out and then Piyush Chawla getting a huge bid at this point of his career.

So, as it always does, this auction had many surprises. It would be great to see how teams implement the ideas they have used in picking players in the actual tournament.
