IPL Auction : Shocks & Surprises

Hi Guys,

It’s been 13 years since we first witnessed IPL auction.

Right from 2008 to 2021, there hasn’t been a single IPL Auction that failed to amaze Cricket Pandits and Fans.

In most of the cases, we witness much more shocks than surprises and it was the same case for 2021 IPL Auction!!!!

Though, which one was the most amazing buy??

Was it Glenn Maxwell going for 14.25 Crores despite doing almost nothing in the last IPL ?

Or, Kyle Jamieson going for 15 Crores without playing a single IPL game ever ?

Or, Chris Morris getting the highest ever bid in the history of IPL and getting signed at 16.25 Crores ?

Let’s have a quick look at the 5 most expensive buys this season….

1. Chris Morris

( Rajasthan Royals for 16.25 Crores )

2. Kyle Jamieson

( Royal Challengers Bangalore for 15 Crores )

3. Glenn Maxwell

( Royal Challengers Bangalore for 14.25 Crores )

4. Jhye Richardson

( Rajasthan Royal for 14 Crores )

5. Krishnappa Gowtham

( Chennai Super Kings for 9.25 crores )

Chris Morris, thus became the most expensive player ever in IPL history while Krishnappa Gowtham became the Richest Uncapped player ever.

Talking about uncapped players, Shahrukh Khan, the deadly hard hitter from Tamil Nadu also got a high bid of 5.25 Crores from Punjab Kings.

While, Arjun Tendulkar also got purchased by Mumbai Indians at the base price of 20 Lakhs.

We can easily see a pattern in all these buys. All of them have been definitely bid higher than their potential.

But what’s the reason behind it??

Demand and Supply!!!

The most common principle of Economics worked really well in this auction.

While there were 4 teams with more than 20 Crores in their bag, the number of quality players available in the auction was much lesser.

Consecutively, we can see all of them getting heap loads of money despite average performance.

But what about a few reasonably low bids!!

While Steve Smith got sold at just 2.2 Crores, Australian Captain Aaron Finch remained unsold.

Umesh Yadav, the only Indian International bowler available merely got 1 Crore. On the other hand, Riley Meredith, who hasn’t played in IPL ever, got 8 Crores from Punjab Kings.

Interestingly, Royal Challengers Bangalore have got two of the three most expensive buys this season.

Chennai Super Kings who had a really terrible season last year have also got two good buys in Mooen Ali and Krishnappa Gowtham.

They picked Cheteshwar Pujara too..

As Aashish Nehra can be heard saying ” You cannot relate a player’s potential to his auction price “

On one hand, there were teams like RCB and PBKS which had released hell lot of players and had to buy some serious prospects in this Auction.

There were teams like Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad which already have their core with them and just chipped in with 1-2 good buys.

As we are done with the auction, it will be quite interesting to see how these top buys perform for their teams.

Not to forget, their has been a history of low performance by players getting high bids as the burden of that price tag always remain with them.

Patrick Cummins not doing much for KKR in the last season is the most recent example of this.
